Project: A Food Processing Factory in Southwark

This project designed by Simon Smith involved the design of the temporary works to the contiguous bored pile, lined underground car park and to provide logistical advice on excavation sequence and methodology. The car park was approx. 60m in length by 30m wide by 11m deep, containing three levels of car parking for a new residential apartment block.

Two levels of internal propping were required using high grade tubular steel sections and two lines of temporary kingpiles to reduce the span. The permanent reinforced concrete capping beam to the contiguous piles was used as a top walking, whilst heavy UB sections diaphramed together were adopted for the lower. The sequence of excavation was carefully assessed to minimise asymmetric loadings on the temporary works whilst enabling efficient soil removal within the tight programme. The removal sequence was closely co-ordinated to ensure other important criteria for the project were achieved on time.
